Mona Lisa Of The Deep

The intriguing picture of “Mona Lisa of the Deep,” found nearly perfectly preserved on the Atlantic Ocean floor was part of a collection of 10 daguerreotypes and ambrotypes scavenged from the 1857 wreck of the S.S. Central off the North Carolina coast. The “Ship of Gold” did indeed sink in a hurricane on the way from Panama to New York, but Thomm and I made up the story of lost love.

V) Sailing on The Ship of Gold
Untold riches in the hold
From Panama to Caroline
18 years and in my prime

V) California far behind
Up the eastern seaboard line
The vessel moaned, the sails were strained
We sailed into a hurricane

CH) He came ahead and waits for me
A wife of leisure soon to be
Now I wait in dreamless sleep
Mona Lisa of the Deep

V) SS Central she went down
400 sank without a sound
Fade to black and ivory white
The photograph I held so tight

V) In my finest dress of lace
See the smile there on my face
I held it for him all these years
So he would never see my tears

V) The letters on his gravestone read
My Mona Lisa of the Deep
I mourned your death my whole life through
I wish I would have drowned with you
